Scotland plans broader anti-nitrate controls

The Scottish executive today proposed greatly increasing the number and area of designated nitrate vulnerable zones (NVZs). Similar plans were announced for England in December (EED 20/12/01). Five new Scottish NVZs are being proposed covering some 18% of farmland; another four potential zones are being examined. The European court of justice condemned the UK in 2000 for only designating NVZs specifically to protect drinking water sources. The Commission announced a repeat legal action in October after the UK had failed to comply. See press release.
