Norwegian fishermen in Sellafield protest

Fishermen from all over Norway this week gathered in the Arctic Lofoten islands to protest against radioactive emissions from Britain's Sellafield nuclear plant. Leaders of 80 fishing communities called on the UK to stop discharges of technetium-99, which was first found to have spread to Norwegian waters in 1997 (EED 19/12/97). Participants hoisted a "black flag of mourning" for the sea. Norway's environment and fisheries ministers participated in the meeting and said that Britain should apply the polluter pays principle or be brought before international courts. See press release.
