Holland condemned over bathing water quality

The European court of justice today condemned the Netherlands for failing to comply fully with the EU's 1975 bathing waters directive. The case was launched after two official warnings were sent to the Dutch government alleging insufficient water quality sampling frequencies (EED 08/07/98). The Netherlands acknowledged the breaches and, in 1999, promised a "step by step" approach to transposing the directive, notifying the EU that it had done so in 2000. The court's advocate general disputed this in his advisory opinion on the case issued in January (EED 17/01/02). See the judgement.
