Ireland to fund "major" river basin project
Irish environment minister Noel Dempsey announced on Friday full government funding for a euros 8.25m project to manage river basins in the country's south-east. Described as "the first of a new generation of major projects" being undertaken to improve Ireland's poor water quality record, the spending will affect groundwaters, estuaries and coastal waters. As well as establishing a water quality monitoring and management system, the project will also set water quality objectives for the area, and promote public information and consultation. See press release.
