EU to strengthen voice on global transport rules

The EU is set to play a stronger role in the global debate on greening aviation and shipping, under a plan released yesterday for European community accession to the International civil aviation organisation (ICAO) and the International maritime organisation (IMO). Both moves were first announced in the European Commission's transport white paper issued last year (EED 12/09/01). EU countries have been pushing for stronger environmental controls in both the ICAO and IMO, but without the benefit of a collective voice, since the community has only observer status.
