Italy steps up environmental reporting

The Italian environment agency (Anpa) released on Tuesday its first comprehensive report on the state of the environment, collating data on 100 indicators covering the period 1990-99. "Up to now, information on the state of the environment in Italy has been patchy," environment minister Altero Matteoli said in a statement. "This initiative will be useful in promoting better environmental awareness," he added. Anpa will publish an annual report from now on. An unofficial ten-year state of the environment report was issued recently by NGO Legambiente (EED 04/02/02). See press release, and report.
