Britain pledges improved marine protection

A reverse in the decline of marine resources, integrated coastal zone management and stronger international cooperation on sustainable fishing were promised yesterday by UK environment minister, Margaret Beckett, at the launch of a report on marine stewardship. Draft rules on coastal waters are due by the end of the year, while an integrated assessment of the state of Britain's seas will be published in 2004, Ms Beckett said. She added that marine resources would be "a particular priority" for the UK at the forthcoming Johannesburg world sustainability summit. See press release.
