Swedes take aim at maritime goal

A government commission is to study measures for improving the marine environment, Swedish environment minister Kjell Larsson has announced. He was responding to a report by a panel set up to monitor and report annually to parliament on the progress of Sweden's national environmental strategy launched last year (EED 04/05/01). Of 15 goals specified in the strategy, the panel reported yesterday, progress had been poorest in "restoring the balance in our seas", where overfishing and eutrophication continue to affect the Baltic region in particular.
