Jump in European paper recycling rate
The rate of paper recycling in Europe jumped by a "remarkable" two percentage points to reach 52.1% in 2001, latest figures from paper and board trade body Cepi reveal. The sharp increase means that for the first time more than half the paper in the EU and associated countries is being recycled, keeping the industry on track to achieve a goal of recycling 56% by 2005 (EED 02/10/01). However, the recycling rate rise owed more to a 4% drop in sales than a meagre 0.8% increase in the volume of paper recycled. See Cepi.
