Spain condemned over PCB disposal

Spain today became the third EU member state to be condemned in the European court of justice for not complying fully with the EU's 1996 directive controlling toxic PCB and PCT wastes. The government failed to draw up inventories of large PCB-containing equipment by the set deadline or make a plan for dealing with such equipment, the court ruled. It delivered similar rulings against Italy in February and France in June (EED 07/06/02). Another judgement was pending against Ireland, but the European Commission withdrew the case last month.
