Belgium, UK head for court penalty over water

Failure to transpose the EU's 1998 drinking water directive should see Belgium and the UK condemned in the European court of justice, two advocates general advised in recent opinions. Both countries were referred to the court for not completing the transposition process by the 25 December 2000 deadline. In the case of the UK, the delay was limited to the areas of Wales and Northern Ireland. Several EU countries are being challenged by the European Commission over delays in transposing this directive (EED 25/02/02). See opinions in cases C-63/02 and C- 122/02.
