Tepid welcome to green gadget merger plan

European electronics and engineering association Orgalime has given a qualified welcome to the European Commission's recently hatched plan to merge earlier separate proposals fostering greater ecodesign and energy efficiency in end-use appliances (EED 07/11/02). In an official statement, the trade body says the suggested "implementing measures" setting product standards should remain a last resort for when voluntary efforts fail. They should in any case be preceded by an extended business impact assessment, it adds. Details of the merger plan first emerged at Orgalime's annual conference in October. See position paper.
