EU radioactive scrap law re-emerges
The European Commission has re-issued a draft directive to strengthen EU controls on the management and disposal of highly radioactive "sealed sources", nearly a year after it was first released (EED 03/04/02). EU governments and the European parliament will now finally get to debate the proposals, which are virtually unchanged from last year's draft. Three minor changes have been made, following an opinion on the draft delivered last July by the EU's toothless economic and social council. See draft directive, and legislative history.
