EU scientists highlight lead candle threat

Candles with wicks strengthened by lead wires are a health hazard and could significantly increase blood lead levels in children, according to a new report from the EU's scientific committee on toxicology. Burning a single lead-wicked candle could raise indoor lead levels "well above" established world health organisation and EU ambient air limits, the report says. Burning several may increase levels beyond permissible workplace concentrations. No data are given on the prevalence of lead candles in the EU, but surveys in the USA show up to 8% of candles use lead. See Cstee report.
