UK ponders economic controls on aviation

The UK finance ministry has launched a consultation on using economic instruments to tackle climate change and other environmental impacts from aviation, as pledged in the autumn (EED 28/11/02). It is intended to inform a forthcoming white paper on the future of aviation in the UK, expected to include plans for major airport expansion. Stakeholders are asked whether action at EU level to reduce climate change impacts from aircraft would be appropriate, and about the feasibility of including emissions from international aircraft within the second Kyoto commitment period from 2012.
