Italian MPs in environmental law appeal
Twenty MPs representing all opposition parties have protested to Italian president Carlo Azeglio Ciampi over the government's intention to rewrite most national environmental laws. Under the new regime, the MPs warn, parliament would effectively be stripped of its legislative powers over environmental matters. A law underpinning the rewriting process now only requires approval from the chamber of deputies after being supported in the senate last month (EED 20/05/03). Mr Ciampi has the power to send laws back to parliament for reconsideration before formally signing them off. See Italian parliament.
