EU citizens slate USA on environment
Six in ten EU citizens believes the USA plays a "negative role" in protecting the environment, according to an official opinion poll. Those polled rated the USA worse on environment than on any of four other issues, including promoting world peace (58% negative). The result is remarkable since the survey was conducted during the recent Iraq war, which aroused deep public opposition across much of the EU. The 59% negative approval rating on environmental issues could well have been influenced by America's withdrawal from the Kyoto climate change protocol. See Eurobarometer 59 and press release.
