Marco Polo freight transfer funding settled

The funding level of a major EU programme to shift freight away from road transport and onto greener modes has been set at €75m after the European parliament abandoned attempts to push the budget up another €40m at its plenary session in Strasbourg last week. The programme will run from 2003 to 2006. In a deal with the council of ministers, MEPs dropped demands to increase funding in return for assurances that the money would be used to support smaller-scale projects (EED 11/04/03).
