Secondary textiles "facing catastrophe"
"Ill-conceived waste definition" as well as competition from east Asian countries and the end of preferential export tariffs for some eastern European countries are killing the EU's secondary textile industry, industry group the Bureau for international recycling said on Friday. The group called called for sorted, cleaned re-usable clothing to be excluded from the definition of waste and for a recycling tax or fee on new textiles to be introduced. The industry is to submit firm proposals for a subsidy scheme to the European Commission "as soon as possible". See press release.
