Growth in French environment spending slows

Spending on environmental protection in France grew slightly in 2001, according to provisional data released by the French environment institute (Ifen). Public investment in waste collection and treatment rose by 4%, compared with 14% in 2000. Spending linked to the environment was more or less stable after growing 13% in 2000. Environment-related employment rose by 1.6% to 305,000, adding 4,900 net jobs, mainly in waste management and water supply. See press release.
