New powers for European maritime agency

A European maritime safety agency created last year should be given wider powers to ensure strict application of EU legal norms, the European Commission said today. In a yet to be released legislative proposal, the EU executive will call for the agency's objectives to be broadened to include security issues. It will also recommend giving the agency a new legal competence and "appropriate means" to take practical counter-measures in cases of accidental or illicit pollution by ships. The agency is already operating provisionally from Brussels (EED 03/12/02). See press release.
