Coal industry's "sustainable role"

The London-based World coal institute insists in a new pamphlet that coal has a "vital" role in pursuing sustainable development, while acknowledging "real problems" with its environmental performance. The report highlight's coal's contribution to the economic, social and environmental pillars of sustainability. It suggests that there are potential synergies between coal, biomass and solar thermal, and stresses the industry's improving performance on emissions as well as the potential for carbon capture, which it says could help make coal a "mainstay" of a future hydrogen economy.
