EU drags heels over GM seed thresholds

European Commission proposals for EU thresholds on accidental presence of genetically modified material in conventional agricultural crop seed batches still face opposition from member states, it has emerged. At a meeting of the bloc's standing committee on seeds on Monday, France called for a scientific opinion on the plans before governments vote (EED 20/02/02). Others, including Italy and Germany, have challenged the Commission's choice of decision-making procedure. They argue that it unfairly reduces dissenting governments' chances of preventing the limits being adopted. See European Commission.
