Europe recycles more steel packaging in 2002

Recycling of steel packaging reached 60% in Europe in 2002 compared with 55% in 2001 and 50% in 2000, according to industry association Apeal. The total volume of steel recycled topped 2m tonnes - saving the extraction of 3m tonnes of iron ore and 1.4m tonnes of coal, it said in a statement. Belgium recycled the highest proportion of steel packaging at 93% followed by Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Sweden and Luxembourg. Norway recycled the European average of 60% while Italy, France, Spain and Ireland managed between 50% and 60%. See press release.
