German support for solar power approved
Germany's lower house of parliament, the Bundestag, has cleared the way for continued promotion of photovoltaic solar power through subsidies that will take effect on 1 January 2004. The new subsidies will equal €0.46 per kilowatt hour (kWh) of electricity, slightly less than the previous €0.51. The government dealt with solar power ahead of other renewables promoted under the renewable energy law (EEG) to ensure that support for photovoltaic was maintained after subsidies expired under a previous programme (EED 05/06/00). The EEG is to be discussed in parliament next spring. See press release.
