Europe-wide anti-coal campaign mooted

Europe's environmental movement is being urged to launch a coordinated campaign to phase out coal, with an interim target of a 50% cut in consumption in ten years. A report issued by the Swedish NGO secretariat on acid rain identifies local economic dependence, several large power firms and the German government as key political obstacles. A concerted effort would leave each national NGO "less exposed nationally", it argues. A phase-out campaign should aim to raise taxes on coal and end subsidies, while promoting energy efficiency and renewables in its stead, report author Fredrik Lundberg argues. See report.
