EU backs Dutch chloroparaffin curbs - for now

The European Commission has granted Holland permission to maintain a national ban on short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs), despite last year's agreement of EU internal market legislation allowing certain uses to continue. In a decision announced on Tuesday under the EU treaty's article 95, the Commission said scientific uncertainty over the risks from SCCPs justified temporary approval of national measures until December 2006. By then extra scientific data should be available to produce a more precise risk assessment, which in turn could lead to tougher EU-wide curbs (EED 10/10/03). See decision.
