Eurochlor sustainability targets questioned

Environmental group Greenpeace has criticised as "particularly weak" a new European chlorine industry commitment on cutting mercury emissions (EED 05/02/04). Eurochlor's target of 1g of mercury per tonne of mercury cell production is double to five times higher than the EU's official best available techniques (BAT) estimate, the NGO said. "If the chlorine industry were really serious about its environmental performance it would not be setting voluntary targets for 2007 which are already achievable, it would be converting [to membrane cell technology] or shutting down its mercury cell plants altogether," said Greenpeace's David Santillo.
