Belgium condemned over water law reporting
The European court of justice has ruled against Belgium in a dispute with the European Commission over implementation reports required under EU water protection legislation. The Commission said the Brussels region of Belgium had taken too long to report on its application of the 1976 dangerous substances directive and the 1978 fresh waters directive from 1993-5. The court agreed but its judgement entails no financial sanction and is thus symbolic only. See ECJ judgement in case C-406/02.
