Commission approves green aid schemes

A German exemption from excise duty for biofuels was approved on Wednesday by the European Commission under EU rules on state aid for environmental protection. Meanwhile, a French scheme aiding farmers to control pollution between 1994 and 2000, which had originally been declared unlawful, was also approved following the adoption of a new Commission regulation exempting member states from certain notification requirements. Separately, an inquiry has been opened into reduced excise duty applied in Italy to fuels used to heat glasshouses. See press releases on Germany, France and Italy.
