Portugal to stiffen fines for green offences
Portugal's environment ministry has proposed strengthening penalties for non-criminal environmental offences. The plan would extend tough existing penalties for water pollution to all areas and enable courts to double fines for "grave" offences up to €5m. Maximum fines for non-payment would be increased. A national register of environmental judicial proceedings would be created. In a related development an Irish local authority enforcement network held its inaugural meeting this week, having been set up under a new national office of environmental enforcement. See
