Italian environmental rules under fire
Italian environmental groups have asked the European Commission to take legal action against their government for mis-applying EU environmental laws. WWF has attacked a decree classifying incineration of inorganic waste as renewable energy. Legambiente is complaining of a failure to provide sanctions for breaches of limits on fine particulate limits in ambient air. Separately, Italy's court of auditors has accused the government of failing to spend as required on energy efficiency and environmental protection measures €150m raised in 1999 from a carbon tax.
