EU wraps up HGV emission law leftovers

The EU's institutions have reached first-reading agreement on technical legislation complementing the Euro IV emission standards for heavy-duty engines due to enter force next year. The new directive sets out requirements for test cycles and on-board diagnostic systems in relevant vehicles, which were agreed in 1999. Voting in Strasbourg on Tuesday the European parliament backed amendments drafted with the council of ministers aimed at preventing manufacturers from designing engines that pass standard emission tests but exceed the standards in real life (EED 19/02/04).
