Greens urge rejection of GM maize and rice

Green MEPs are urging agriculture ministers to refuse EU-wide authorisation for a Syngenta GM maize variety when they meet in council on 26 April, arguing that new reports question the safety of the crop (EED 28/01/04). Meanwhile, Friends of the Earth asked member states to block an application from German firm Bayer to market a modified rice variety. Following a positive risk assessment from the UK, the European Commission can approve the application unilaterally unless at least one member state objects by 28 March.
