Denmark "will go it alone" on phthalates

Danish environment minister Hans Christian Schmidt has promised a national ban on use of all endocrine-disrupting chemicals in children's toys next year at the latest, national media reported on Wednesday. In an apparent reaction to NGO claims that Disney corporation products contain a range of toxic substances, Mr Schmidt said: "If the EU doesn't deliver, then Denmark will proceed ahead alone." Successive Danish governments have criticised toy manufacturers and importers over the continued use of phthalates in toys despite a partial national ban in force since 1999 (EED 22/03/99).
