Iceland produces first waste programme

Iceland's environment ministry has devised the country's first national waste programme. The 12-year plan is designed to achieve EU environmental targets, implementing regulations passed last year (EED 23/10/03). Some landfill sites and the country's two existing incineration plants will be closed, although another incineration plant will be opened. To reach the objectives, Iceland has to increase significantly its reuse and recycling of biodegradable household waste, packaging and electrical and electronic appliances. See press release.
