New Polish environment minister appointed

The incoming Polish government of Marek Belka has appointed the head of the country's biggest environmental agency, the National environment protection and water management fund, as new environment minister. Jerzy Swaton, 57, who is independent of any political party, replaces Czeslaw Sleziak, a member of the left democrat party of outgoing prime minister Leszak Miller. Mr Swaton said Poland should use new technologies to meet its environmental challenges and said such technology represented an opportunity to create jobs. See press release.
