NGOs challenge Århus convention compliance

Compliance by certain countries with the UN convention promoting access to environmental information and justice has been called into question by several green NGOs. Five claims against four former Soviet countries plus Hungary have been filed in relation to allegedly insufficient public consultation and incompatible legislation. They were on the agenda of a compliance committee meeting this week in Geneva. It was hoped that such challenges would "encourage governments to take their obligations seriously", a UN economic commission for Europe official said in a statement.
