EU challenges Ukraine over Danube delta canal

The European Commission has escalated a dispute with Ukraine over a shipping canal in a protected area of the Danube delta. On Wednesday the EU executive said it "deeply regretted" the reported opening of the Bystroye canal, which cuts through part of the delta protected under the Ramsar international wetlands convention. It called for work on the project to be halted to allow full environmental impact assessment and transboundary evaluation. See Commission press release.
