EU urged to pump cash into organic farming

European organic farmers have welcomed an EU action plan for the sector unveiled in June, while demanding "much more" resources (EED 10/06/04). Sector group Ifoam said it supported many proposed actions such as harmonisation of standards and inspections. Its major concern was "the complete lack of resources" allocated by the European Commission. The group also said it was "very disappointed" by proposals on labelling and thresholds for genetically modified (GM) material. These "do not even begin to deal adequately with GM contamination", it said. See Ifoam and position paper.
