"Mixed" EU progress on waste tyre recovery
Scandinavian countries have already met tyre recovery targets for 2006 set in the 1999 EU directive on waste landfilling but Spain still has a long way to go, it was reported at a meeting of the Bureau of international recycling (Bir) last week. "Mixed" progress towards exclusion of shredded tyres from landfills was reported. Landfilling of whole tyres has been illegal in the EU since 2003 (EED 16/07/03). An industry representative predicted that most member states would by 2006 have given producers primary responsibility for tyre recovery. See press release.
